GE Hackers Annual Father’s Day Outing

June 16, 2024

It was another successful Father’s Day golf adventure for the Hackers and Friends and Family! Could not ask for nicer weather! I did continue my apparent new trend of hazardous cart driving as I, um, bumped, into the starter’s cart as we approached him to see who was on deck.  He was a nice guy and didn’t throw me off the course immediately (it may have been a different story if Dave had been in the cart with me).

I am not sure where to begin here.  Let’s get the handicap business out of the way first. The holes that were randomly selected for the Peoria-method, were not very friendly to some (depending on how you look at it).  In particular, Andy, Mark and John each shot par or better on those 6 holes, resulting in gross “PEORIA” scores of 72, 66, and 69 being used to compute their handicaps. Had we not averaged-in the baseline handicaps (taken from league play), these 3 players would basically have been shooting scratch, and getting no strokes on any hole, when compared to everyone else. While the Peoria method seemed to work OK for us last year, I am not sure it would’ve been a good idea to have only used it this year.  May need to revisit the handicapping for next time.

Anyway, now on to scoring. As you all know by now, I had a bit of an issue with the spreadsheet which prevented me from determining a winner on the day of.  Then, after some lost sleep and an early wake-up, I figured out the issue, which was just bad typing on my part, corrected that and, unfortunately, announced an unofficial win via email.  As it happens, there was an additional case of bad data in, which I found today as I started going over the results. Let me preface this by saying that when I originally set up the spreadsheet, I had assigned people, temporarily, to the A, B, C and D positions of each team, mostly as placeholders, but also in what I kind of expected would be their actual positions.  Well, of course I had a couple in the wrong place, which I discovered as I was verifying scores and points and such.  What this means is the scores I was using when I sent the email with the “unofficial” winners, have changed, and significantly enough to change the order of finish.  Specifically, I had DAVE and DAN flipped in team #3, and BETTE and TOM flipped in team #4. By putting Dave and Dan in the same position as they were on their scorecard, the team points dropped, which lead to the win going to Team #1 <insert calls for an audit here>

So, for the win, the team of John, Joe, Steve and Andy with 21 points. Second place goes to Brian, Dave, Tim and Dan Richardson with 18 points. Mark, Bob, Kieran and Dan Fusco had 13 points, while Tom, Bette, Jim and Dan Gianatti finished with 7 points.

For individual results, once again, Mark had the best gross score of the day, coming in with 80 as well as sharing high Stableford Points with Tim, at 19 each . John was next with 84, while Dan Fusco and Andy were 3rd with 85. Brian, Joe, and Jim rounded out the sub-90 scores this year, with a pair of 88s and an 89, respectively.

Net scoring saw Joe out front with a 71, followed by Dan Fusco at 72, and Mark with a 73. Last year’s net leaders, Jim and Tim, both came in next with 74s

Mark and Tim had the most individual Stableford points at 19 each, followed by Joe and Dan Fusco with 18 each.

There were 7 birdies out there this year. Dan Fusco had 1 on the par 3 buried elephant hole, aka #6, and another on the hardest hole out there, #16.  Nice going Dan! Joe made back-to-back birdies on #5  and again at the buried elephant hole as well. Well done Joe! That birdie was a net eagle at 3 points for the team! John added another 3 points to the team with his birdie, net eagle at the 2nd hardest hole on the course, the always tricky hole #2. That was a great 2nd shot into that green! John capped off the round with his 2nd birdie at the 18th. Nice finish John! Mark rounded out the birdie count with his on the uphill par 4 14th, another tricky hole to score on. Nice job Mark!

Mark led with pars at 10, followed by Andy and John with 8 and 7 respectively.
